The new Legend Rogaining season opened in Ķīpsala on 21 March with 800 participants, then continued in Ropaži, Pilsrundāle near Rundāle Palace, and Baldone near Mercendarbe Manor. Now the series returns to the capital for its traditional November season finale. The event centre will be at Akropole Rīga, on the site where the Old Believer Kuznetsov family established a world-famous porcelain and faience factory in the 19th century. Its tableware, decorated by Romāns Suta, reached royal courts. Two giant chimneys will remind rogainers of the former factory.
The course will follow the Daugava from the Southern Bridge to Riga Hydroelectric Power Plant and beyond, covering Rumbula, Dārziņi and parts of Salaspils Municipality as far as the Botanical Garden. Participants can run through forests, meadows and the courtyards of Ķengarags. The name Ķengarags does not derive from the Latvian word for abuse or mockery: it is thought to come either from a local fisherman named Ķenga or from the Livonian word for “shoe”, which a headland in a bend of the Daugava may once have resembled. The original “Shoe Cape” lay farther upriver. As the monastery's territory expanded, the name Ķengarags came to include newly acquired land extending to the present-day Akropole site.
Participants can choose a 2h, 4h or 6h course in teams of 2–5, or a 2h solo rogaine. Cyclists can take on the familiar 3h MTBO course. Younger children can join an experienced instructor for a children's walk, visiting a few checkpoints.
In rogaining, participants plan their own route to visit as many checkpoints and collect as many points as possible within the time limit. Strategic thinking must be combined with physical endurance. This form of orienteering offers enjoyment for experienced competitors and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
The organisers have prepared an especially generous prize pool this year. After this round, the recipients of the major Intervals and Impro prizes will be known. The top three teams in the overall standings will be awarded separately in the 2h, 4h and 6h courses. The best 6h teams will receive Intervals gift cards worth €1,000 for first, €750 for second and €500 for third. The best 4h teams will receive Impro.lv gift cards for the same amounts: €1,000, €750 and €500. Winners of the 3h MTB season standings will receive a spa break prize from Alexela.
November events have seen sunshine, rain, warm and cold weather, and even very strong winds, but this has never stopped Legend Rogaining participants from taking part. See you at the event! Registration and further information: rogainings.lv.
